Health advantages
According to a recent National Institutes of Health study, people who regularly consume black tea may reduce their chance of dying by as much as 13%. The researchers discovered that people who drank two or more cups of black tea each day had the lowest mortality risk.
Previous research has suggested that green tea and coffee may both have health advantages. Green tea and coffee appear to lower mortality through reducing chronic diseases, while the precise mechanisms are still unknown.
In populations where black tea is the primary variety drank, the relationship between tea drinking and mortality risk is still unclear, according to the NIH researchers. Contrarily, documented studies in populations where drinking black tea is more prevalent are scarce and often provide contradictory results.
Dr. Maki Inoue-Choi, the study's principal author, and his colleagues set out to research the correlations between tea consumption and all-cause death. Additionally, the team intended to investigate if common tea ingredients like milk and sugar or genetic variations could influence how quickly people metabolise caffeine.
The study's sample included nearly 500,000 participants in the U.K. Biobank project, ranging in age from 40 to 69. Eighty-five percent of them claimed to routinely consume tea, and eighty-nine percent of those who did claimed to favour black tea.
Two or more cups of black tea per day were associated with a 9 to 13% decreased risk of premature death from all causes, according to a study of the data. These health advantages were discovered despite the presence of added sugar and other elements that might affect the metabolism of caffeine.
Regardless of genetic diversity in caffeine metabolism, the researchers found that higher tea consumption was related with a lower mortality risk among people who drank two or more cups daily. These results imply that tea can be a healthy food choice, even at increased ingestion levels.
The study has been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine publication.
