The COLUMBIA, S.C. Prison officials in South Carolina have decided to keep former lawyer and murderer Alex Murdaugh in a special protected unit when he begins serving a life term for the deaths of his wife and children.
According to a news release from the state Department of Corrections on Friday, mental health and prison specialists examined Murdaugh's case, taking into account the massive amount of media attention it received as well as psychiatric and other tests, and came to the conclusion that he should be kept in protective custody.
The protection unit accommodates 28 inmates, each of whom has a cell and is granted the same rights as other criminals. Officials from the prison claimed that security reasons prevented them from revealing the location of the unit.
In June 2021, Murdaugh was found guilty of killing his wife and younger son at their Colleton County house. After shooting them, according to investigators, Murdaugh cleaned up, dumped the guns, and then went to see his ill mother before going back home and dialling 911 to report the fatalities.
The convictions and life sentence of Murdaugh are being appealed by the defence team. Murdaugh has steadfastly defended his innocence and claimed there is no evidence directly connecting him to the deaths.
