Saudi Arabia’s New Visa Rules: Clarity for Expatriates and Extended Entry Opportunities

In a move to provide clarity on visa regulations for expatriates, Saudi Arabia has introduced new guidelines that offer foreign residents increased flexibility regarding their exit and re-entry visas. Under these revised rules, expatriates holding valid exit/re-entry visas are now allowed to re-enter the kingdom until their visa’s expiry date.

The General Directorate of Passports in Saudi Arabia has underlined that individuals with exit/re-entry visas have the option to electronically extend their visas while abroad. This can be achieved by conveniently processing the required fees through either the Absher platform or the Muqeem portal.

Emphasizing the prerequisites for visa issuance, officials have noted that an expatriate’s passport must remain valid for a minimum of 90 days for obtaining an exit/re-entry visa, and 60 days for acquiring a final exit visa.

The directorate has also clarified that the conversion of an exit/re-entry visa into a final exit visa is not permitted if the individual is currently located outside of Saudi Arabia.

Notably, Saudi Arabia hosts a substantial population of migrant workers predominantly from various Asian nations.

Recent statistics from the KSA General Authority reveal that the kingdom’s overall population stands at 32.2 million, with foreigners constituting approximately 13.4 million or 41.5 percent of this total. This demographic composition is based on a recent census.

The data further indicates that over 42 percent of the foreign population in Saudi Arabia comprises nationals from three Asian countries.

This latest announcement by Saudi Arabia underscores the nation’s efforts to streamline visa processes for expatriates, fostering smoother entry and exit experiences while accommodating its diverse migrant worker community.
